- Spend more time with the people you love
If you’ve looked for anxiety cures in the past, then you’ve likely seen plenty of medical professionals recommending exercise. This is for good reason, after all, regular exercise has been shown to reduce symptoms of anxiety. However, we’ve found time and again that our patients believe that exercise has to be dramatic and exhausting. The truth is that getting outside once a day, walking a few times around the block, and breathing in fresh air can actually help reduce signs of anxiety.
Yoga, mindful mediation, and focused breathing can all help you reduce stress and reduce anxiety. If you can, sign up for a yoga class in your area, find a mediation group, or go to a workshop that teaches breathing exercises. If you can’t get to these activities in person, or if your anxiety prevents you from doing so, then you can find instruction and help online as well.
If all you can do is turn your phone off for five minutes then that’s a start, but try unplugging entirely for an entire day or even a weekend. If that doesn’t work for you, think about what on your phone causes you the most stress. You may end up deleting social media, getting rid of automatic news updates, or setting a limit on how much time you spend on your phone – or when you’re on your phone. Regardless, many people find reducing their time online to be helpful in reducing anxiety.
You’ve likely heard the old adage, “Laughter is the best medicine.” At Rancho Wellness, we believe that may be true! Find a TV show you think is funny, listen to an old comedy record, or invite a friend over who makes you laugh. Laughing can be healing and can help reduce stress.
If there are people in your life you can talk to about your anxiety, then it’s fine to share it with them, but don’t forget to talk about other things that don’t make you anxious. Ask them about their day and see if you can do something for them. Sometimes getting out of your head and helping another person can be just what the doctor ordered.
